According to a new poll, the raid at Mar-a-Lago gave Donald Trump a 10 point boost, widening his lead over Ron DeSantis in the GOP primary.

The POLITICO/Morning Consult poll was conducted on August 10 after federal agents searched the Florida property, but before it was revealed that the FBI seized 11 sets of classified documents.

If the Republican presidential primary were held that day, a majority of registered voters would vote for Trump. The number of people who said they would vote for the former president increased by four points.

The number of people who could be Trump's fiercest competition dropped. The events of this week gave Trump a 10 point boost over his opponent.

Trump, who has teased a run but not yet formally announced that he intends to, has a 40 point lead over his competitors. The man who defended Trump after the FBI raid hasn't officially announced he's running.

No other candidate had double-digit support according to the survey. The poll's margin of error is small.

Insider reported on Saturday that Republican strategists thought the Mar-a-Lago raid would help Trump.

Trump is being investigated for potential crimes related to his handling of documents that could threaten US national security, and allies say he could exploit the investigation to play into the narrative that he's the target of a "deep state" conspiracy.

Insider was told that Trump will be able to reprise his role as a "martyr" because of the events of this week.
