During the Bears' 19-14 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Soldier Field's playing surface was criticized.

The president of the NFL Players Association questioned why the league allowed the Bears and Chiefs to play on a field that was so bad it was hard to see.

The field met minimum testing standards according to the National Football League. What is an acceptable surface for players to compete on needs to be reexamined. Testing needs to look at the performance and safety of every field. The National Football League can and should do better.

The Bears hosted a preseason game eight days after a concert at Soldier Field left the grass damaged with missing turf across the length of the field. The Chicago Fire moved their August 21 game to SeatGeek Stadium because of the field condition at Soldier Field.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus knows the players are trying to do their best, but he doesn't know the situation. I thought it was good and I'll leave it at that.

The Bears held their annual family fest practice at Soldier Field last Tuesday and some players say the field conditions Saturday were better than earlier in the week.

"I think it's always been that way," Fields said. The Family Fest was better than this one. It wasn't the best, but it was better than it was this week. It could definitely be better.

Cairo Santos, the kicker for the Bears, lamented last week that the field conditions at Soldier Field have forced him to change how he trains during the off-season.

"I was training in Florida and I was going to a turf field at a high school which was perfect." It was very close to 'OK'. I'm starting to get too used to it. There is a soccer field in my neighborhood. It's lengthy. I said "OK." This is similar to it.

He said that he has seen better. We have to deal with it.

Soldier Field is the smallest stadium in the National Football League. In September of last year, the Bears signed a PSA to sell their historic home to Arlington Park for $197 million.

A new stadium for the Bears is expected to be located at Arlington Park, which is 30 miles from Soldier Field.
