Most people buy their airline tickets online. Booking your Breeze Airways ticket at the airport on Tuesdays between 11AM and 1PM will save you money. Let's discuss why...
Breeze Airways is an ultra low cost carrier that is new to the US. When you get to the booking page of Breeze Airways, you might notice a quirk in the form of a Technology Development Charge.
For example, take the below $39 flight from Tampa to Huntsville.
The base fare is only $13.40 but there are taxes and fees of $25.60 and a $10 technology development charge.
The amount is not the same with every itinerary. Take the below flight to Las Vegas.
There is a technology development charge for this flight.
You have to pay the fee if you book through Breeze Airways. If you book at any Breeze Airways ticket counter on a Tuesday between 11AM and 1PM, you won't have to pay the technology development charge.
Breeze Airways claims that they are a technology company that flies airplanes and that they are using this portion of the fare to make a really nice airline.
You can save money by booking Breeze Airways tickets on Tuesdays between 11AM and 1PM, but what is the logic of that? Taxes come down to it.
The airlines have to pay excise taxes on airfare, but not on optional fees. There needs to be a way to avoid paying the optional fee. Since you can avoid it, Breeze doesn't have to pay taxes on the Technology Development Charge portion of the ticket cost.
Breeze doesn't want to make it easy for people to book at the airport, which is why there's only a two hour period where you can book tickets at the airport.
Ultra low cost carriers have similar made up charges that make up a large portion of the airfare in order to reduce the taxes they have to pay.
I think it's worth being aware of, but for most people it's not worth going to the airport just to save the fee. If you travel for a lot of people, the savings may be worth it. If you happen to be at an airport on a Tuesday, this could be more valuable.
Breeze Airways tickets can be booked at the airport on Tuesdays between 11AM and 1PM. Breeze reservations at the airport don't apply to the technology development charge.
Ultra low cost carriers try to reduce the taxes they have to pay by making as much of the fare as possible fees. Airfare is subject to a federal excise tax of 7.5%.
The majority of people won't have to go through the hassle of booking at the airport.
