It's also the colour of a poisonous tree frog. He couldn't bring himself to smile after being hired to model the hideous thing.

The gunge green strip is out of place when compared to United's new home and away kits, which have quickly become popular with supporters.

The excellent red home kit shirt is an amalgamation of several classic United strips from the early 1990s to the present day. There were subtle historic visual references plucked from several decades worth of United change kits.

There is a home.

An instant classic.

Modern football kit design circles are trying to push the envelope when it comes to creating deliberately divisive third strips, and the latest example is United's ultra-garish green kit.

More and more big clubs are getting third kits that seem to be calculated ploys to get tongues wagging on social media, so drumming up a bit of extra buzz on launch day.

Thankfully, some clubs out there have succeeded in bucking the trend and proving to their peers that it is still possible to release a nice third kit in this day and age.

Arsenal

It's a challenge to make rosy pink look good, but the heraldic "ermine" pattern found on their historic club crest is a jumping off point for the third kit in pastels.

Bayern Munich

The black strip is complemented by a red trim. The change kit of the Bavarians is almost certain to shimmer under the lights while providing an ace in the pack.

It is not to say that all third kits released for the 2022-23 are winners, with many clubs sticking to the format of going unnecessarily wild in their efforts.

Spurs' new blue and navy ripple print design is an improvement on their purple third kit from last season, but that is the definition of damning it with faint praise. It's hysterical for all the wrong reasons.

Manchester City

The shirt is supposed to look like the famous Mancunian worker bee, but that doesn't explain why City chose to throw an aggressively fluorescent shade of yellow and black stripes into the equation.
