The statement from the Executive Committee members, seminary presidents and heads of mission organizations gave few details about the investigation, but indicated that it dealt with widespread sexual abuse problems in the United States.

The statement said that each of the entities is resolved to cooperate with the investigation. Current leaders across the SBC have a firm conviction to address those issues of the past and are implementing measures to ensure they are never repeated in the future.

The Justice Department didn't say anything about the investigation immediately.

The sex abuse task force released a report from Guidepost Solutions. The firm investigated how denominational leaders mishandled sex abuse claims and mistreated victims.

The report revealed that the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention kept a secret list of church workers accused of abuse. The list had hundreds of accused workers on it.

Guidepost wouldn't comment on the DOJ investigation.

Following the release of the Guidepost report, the SBC voted during its annual meeting in June to create a way to track pastors and other church workers credibly accused of sex abuse. The names of the Southern Baptists who will serve on the task force were announced by the president.
