The region is suffering under a historic dry spell as water levels in major rivers have fallen. Locals say that centuries-old warning messages have appeared in the riverbeds.

The local German reporter said that the boulders are called Hungersteine or "Hunger Stones."

The Elbe River runs from the mountains of Czechia through Germany to the North Sea and one of the stones is embedded in it.

In the dry riverbed, the stone is once again visible after a long time. If you see me, weep, that's what the warning says.

According to NPR, hunger stones were used ashydrological landmarks across central Europe.

The initials of authors were lost to history and the stones werechiselled with the years of hardship. There are inscriptions warning of the consequences of a dry spell. A bad harvest, lack of food, high prices, and hunger for poor people were caused by the lack of food due to the lack of rain. Researchers said that the stones commemorate historic droughts.

The recent droughts in Europe once again made visible the "Hunger Stones" in some Czech and German rivers. These stones were used to mark desperately low river levels that would forecast famines.
