Rushdie was on stage for a panel when he was attacked.

The New York State Police responded to the incident.

Rushdie and an interviewer were attacked by a male suspect who ran up onto the stage. Rushdie was flown to an area hospital after he was stabbed in the neck. His condition is unknown at this time. The interviewer was injured. The suspect was immediately taken into custody by a State Trooper.

The institution that held the panel was coordinating with emergency officials on a public response after the attack, according to a person from the institution.

The agency that represents Rushdie did not reply to the request.

After Rushdie's book was banned in Iran, a $3 million bounty was placed on his head. According to the AP, the Iranian government has distanced itself from the bounty, but the fatwa has been continued by a semi- official religious organization.

In 2007, Rushdie was knighted for his work and has received many literary prizes.

He was going to be on a panel with Henry Reese, president of the City of Asylum in Pittsburgh, an organization that provides sanctuary to writers who are at risk of persecution.

The New York State Police were thanked by the governor.

The Governor wrote that they were thinking of the loved ones of the actor. I have ordered the State Police to help with the investigation.
