A new European gas link could be up and running in less than a year.

According to the Financial Times, Spain's energy and environment minister said on Friday that a piece of the Spain to France gas line could be ready in nine months.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, as well as leaders from Spain, Portugal, and France, were mentioned by the German Chancellor as he voiced support for a new gas line.

The Prime Minister of Portugal said on Thursday that Germany could count on his country's commitment to the building of a gas line.

Europe is facing its most dire energy crisis in decades and there is a lot of enthusiasm for the new vehicle. Russia has slashed gas supplies to Europe and recently reduced flows through the Nord Stream 1 line.

Much of Europe's natural gas import capacity can be found on the Iberian peninsula. There should be other connections between north Africa and Europe that will help us to increase our energy supply.

Russian supplies accounted for 40% of Europe's energy demand. The US has increased its exports of liquified natural gas to Europe.
