John Dean, a Watergate whistle blower, slammed Donald Trump's comparison of the FBI's search of his Mar-a-Lago resort to the Watergate scandal.
It's not good. It shows he doesn't know what happened with Watergate.
It was more than a break-in. He said that the evidence of Nixon's abuse of power came from the cover-up.
Dean compared Trump's lashing out at the FBI and DOJ to how Nixon reacted to Watergate.
Nixon was a believer in institutionalism. He wouldn't attack the FBI in a way that Trump does. Dean said that the man knew those people.
These people have the best interests of the country in mind and are hard working. I don't think Trump's attacks are right.
Nixon's White House counsel was Dean. He was involved in the cover-up when it came to the DNC headquarters.
He became the first White House official to tie Nixon to the scandal and was a key whistle blower. Dean has criticized Trump and the Republicans in the past.
In his Monday statement, the former president mentioned Watergate. There is a difference between Watergate and this. Trump asked, "What do you think?" The Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President.
The two incidents are completely different according to experts who studied them. The Mar-a-Lago raid was conducted by FBI agents and authorized by a search warrant, unlike Watergate where private citizens were hired to commit a crime.
The warrant and other records related to the raid on Trump's home have not been made public.
Dean said on Thursday that it was foolish for Trump to make claims about the Mar-a-Lago search in his public statement, as he may now find it difficult to argue that the warrant should not be made public.
I don't think that's a good position for Trump to be in, to keep it a secret. He said that he was between a rock and a hard place.
