A U.S. military general is frustrated over a Russian satellite that appears to be following a U.S. military satellite. In an interview with NBC News, James Dickinson, commander of U.S. Space Command, described the launch of Russian satellite Kosmos 2558 as "irresponsible behavior." It is similar to one of our high value assets for the U.S. government. We will keep updating that and track that. Russia launched Kosmos 2558 into the same plane as the U.S. military satellite. The U.S. satellite went up in February on a rocket. At the time, experts believed that Russia's satellite was being used to spy on the US.
The Russian satellite was launched at a time when the U.S. satellite passed over the Russian spaceport. The Russian satellite may attempt to get a closer look at the U.S. military satellite in order to learn more about it.
This isn't the first time Russia has sent a spy satellite to spy on the U.S. In 2020, a Russian satellite called Kosmos 2542 was in the middle of the earth. It is not best practice to follow another satellite in space.
There isn't much else the US government can do about it. We are watching to see how close the Russian satellite will come to the U.S.
