Every system shuts down when power is out.
Toronto's downtown is experiencing a major power outage, affecting the financial district and major commercial hubs such as the Toronto Eaton Centre, home to some 200 retailers.
The company had "all hands on deck" to restore power, according to a Hydro One spokesman. The power went out at around 1 pm. Thousands of customers are affected by Toronto time.
There are unconfirmed reports that a barge carrying a crane came into contact with high-voltage transmission lines. We are trying to get TorontoHydro customers back as soon as possible.

The subway was working normally and trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange was unaffected.
The Eaton Centre is North America's busiest shopping mall and will be affected by the outage.
The employees at the store were unable to serve customers because their cash register and systems were off-line for about an hour.
Wynee Gee is a full-time staff member. Power and electricity are required in every aspect of this job. It is very eye- opening.
She said that she and her colleagues were immediately evacuated. The power had started to come back by mid-afternoon. Customers were not allowed into the mall despite her coworkers returning to the store.
The sales targets for the day will be impacted by an incident like this. Staff must hit their daily sales goals in order to receive their monthly bonus. She said there was no way that would get hit today.
Electricity issues hurt us when we have technological issues. It's money that we can't afford. It doesn't feel good. She said it will be difficult to make up the day's sales since midday to evening is the busiest time of the day.
A request for comment was not responded to by the company.
The Rogers outage cost businesses tens of thousands of dollars.
