The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that unvaccinated Americans don't need to be tested for the coronaviruses after they're exposed.
If you were exposed to Covid-19, you should wear a mask for 10 days and be tested after five days, even if you aren't up to date on coronaviruses vaccines, according to the CDC.
If you test positive for the coronaviruses, you are still encouraged to wear a mask in public for another five days.
High-risk settings like long-term care facilities, jails and homeless shelters may still consider mass-testing, despite the CDC no longer encouraging institutions to continually test for the virus.
CDC epidemiologist Greta Massetti said in a statement that the guidance helps us move to a point where COVID-19 no longer severely affects our daily lives.
Some people still face a high risk of Covid-19 due to age and underlying health conditions, but vaccines and treatments have reduced the risk for many Americans. In recent months, the country has reported more than 100,000 new coronaviruses cases per day, up from 25,000 in March, but deaths have remained relatively stable. Most Americans have contracted the coronaviruses at least once, and just under half of those who have received booster shots have done so.
