The first end-to-end encryption features for Messenger were tested by Meta. Voice and video calls will be protected in 2021. The default end-to-end encryption was introduced in January. End-to-end encryption is not currently enabled by default for all conversations.

Encrypted backups

After years of criticism, the messaging service began to offer backup to its users. The chat app always offered end-to-end protection for chats, but its backups weren't protected, giving law enforcement access to all the data.

Other tests

Meta is planning to expand its end-to-end encryption test for social media users. Last year, the photo sharing service began testing end-to-end messages. The feature was first introduced for all users in Russia and Ukraine.

The social media giant will allow users to unsend messages in the future.

Last year, Meta said that it would be rolling out end-to-end encryption protection across all of its apps.
