It has been years since Facebook topped the teen social media charts, but the platform is still losing ground. According to a new survey, less than a third of teenagers use social media. In the past two years, the percentage of teens has gone down.

According to the data from the 2021, it was suggested that Facebook remained a social media stronghold.

The apparent big tech winner is YouTube. In the most recent teen survey, 98% of U.S. youth said they use the video site, up from 85% in the previous year. It was the most used platform for adults in the year 2021.

The new report confirmed that TikTok has become the reining teen-Champ. A majority of teens say they use the platform, and a minority say they are on TikTok almost constantly. More than half of teens say that they useSnapchat andInstagram.

The percentages are up from the previous survey but down from the previous one. According to a report four years ago, 70% of the teenagers said they used social media. In the most recent study, the Research Center noted that the survey methods differed and that direct comparisons can't be made between the two surveys due to differences in the way they were conducted. The teen usage numbers were down on all of those platforms. Two of the platforms tracked by the Center in the previous year are no longer around.

In addition to cataloging Facebook's failure to reach the youth, the report noted other trends in youth internet usage. Nearly half of teens said they are online almost constantly, and 97 percent said they use the internet daily. The values are higher than in the past. More than a third of teenagers say they are on at least one of the top five online platforms.

The data showed differences in internet and social media use by different groups. Girls are more likely to say they're on TikTok, while teen boys are more likely to say they're on the popular gaming sites. Hispanics and black teens were more likely to be on the internet. Teens living in households with an annual income of $30,000-$75,999 were most likely to report constant internet usage.

What do teenagers think about all that time spent online? Half of the teens who reported near constant internet usage thought they were spending too much time on social media It would be hard to give up social media completely, according to more than half of teens.

Social media companies have been struggling recently, releasing less than stellar quarterly financial reports. The specifics of platform popularity have changed over time, but one thing remains the same: the teens are hooked on social media.
