A lot of aircraft were destroyed in the Ukrainian attack on the airfield. It was the biggest single day loss of Russian air power since the war began. It could affect Russian air operations in the future.

As many as eight Su-27 fighters, four Su-30 fighter-bombers, five Su-24 bombers, and six Mi were destroyed in the attack, which took place in the middle of the day.

In the hours after the attack, there was a video from the tarmac. Satellite imagery from Wednesday seems to confirm the losses of Su 24 and Su 27/30. Nine Russian planes were destroyed by the Ukrainian defense ministry.

None of these sources are complete. The Russian navy may have written off as many as 27 aircraft. It is possible that the 43rd Infantry is no longer effective. The unit will need to be rebuilt.

We don't know how the Ukrainians hit the town, which is 120 miles from the front line. Satellite imagery shows craters that are likely to be used for missiles. The Ukrainians have been able to destroy Russian aircraft on the ground than the Russians have been able to do. Russian missiles and rockets hit Ukrainian air bases in the early hours of February 23. Prior to the attacks, Ukrainian commanders dispersed their planes and choppers.

The Russians have destroyed just three Ukrainian aircraft in the five months of fighting. Russian air-defenses have shot down most of the manned aircraft in the country.

Not counting Tuesday's losses, most of Russia's manned aircraft losses have been in the air. The Russians lost dozens of aircraft on the ground after the February missile strike on Millerovo air base.

The lack of discipline on the Russian side and the ability of the Ukrainians to destroy Russian aircraft at their bases speaks volumes about the discipline of Ukrainian squadrons. The Ukrainian air force and navy rely on the Americans for intel to plan their moves.

Despite their losses, the Russian air force and navy continue to park their aircraft at the same airfield. Is the raid going to change any minds in the Kremlin?

Thousands of Russian tourists fled the peninsula in the hours after the air base attack, causing a traffic jam along the bridge to Russia. The air arm of the Black Sea Fleet is unknown.

Ukraine has the ability to strike any Russian facility within range of its expanding arsenal of deep-strike weapons. The Russian position is even more perilous because of the danger from Ukrainian partisans.

To be safe from attack, Russian squadrons need to be hundreds of miles from Ukrainian territory. While Russia isn't hurting for air base infrastructure in this zone of relative safety, the added distance would weigh on the Kremlin's air operations over Ukranian

The longer a bomber has to fly to reach the front, the less time it can spend at the front. The Ukrainians were able to take out a lot of Russia's aircraft by bombing the airfield.
