The United Kingdom believes that Russia has established major new ground forces in a village east of Moscow as it seeks to gain the upper hand in its war with Ukraine.
According to the U.K.'s defense ministry, the Russian government may pull resources from volunteer battalions that are being recruited across the country.
The recruitment is open to men up to 50 years old with only a middle school education, and they are being offered lucrative cash bonuses once they deploy to Ukraine.
According to the U.K. ministry, a Russian army corps usually consists of 15000 to 20,000 soldiers.
The new force isn't likely to be decisive in the campaign because the level of enthusiasm for volunteering is low.
The city of Kherson was taken by the Russians early in the war. Russian commanders are likely to face competing priorities of completing Russia's assault on the eastern Donbas region and bolstering forces in the southern part of Ukraine.
Russia took control of the Luhansk province in the east of the country last month and is trying to take control of the other province.
On Tuesday, the U.S. State Department announced that it would provide $89 million to help Ukraine with demining efforts, a day after it was announced that the US was giving $1 billion in military equipment to Ukraine.
