The days of a Jetsons-like society zipping around in flying cars is still a long way off, but United Airlines is making a $10 million bet on flying cars. A deposit has been put down by the carrier for 200 flying taxis.
The Federal Aviation Administration has not yet cleared those vehicles to begin ferrying passengers, but the down payment is a sign that United supports the technology. According to The Wall Street Journal, American Airlines invested $25 million in an electric aircraft company, but it has not yet been delivered.
People will be able to use their time more efficiently by using the aircraft as they will be able to travel around cities to hub airports. Carbon emissions would be reduced because they are electric craft. The FAA is trying to figure out how to integrate them with existing flight patterns and requirements for pilots. certification is expected to happen by the end of the year.
There were test flights for the aircraft.
Michael Leskinen said that the announcement marks a new important phase in the relationship. Consumers, businesses, and policymakers are all aligning to prioritize technology that reduces the impact of climate change.
No runway is required because the e VTOL aircraft have the ability to take off and land in a helicopter-like fashion. They have a range of 60 miles and can travel up to 150 mph. The company says that passengers will book rides on their phone.
The flying taxis will be used in one or two of the more congested cities where United operates.
