Domino's tried to sell pizza to Italians, but they didn't like it very much.
The last of the pizza company's locations in Italy have closed, according to a report.
The first Domino's in Italy opened in 2015, and the company wanted to be different. Its business model was delivery heavy.
There was hope for a distinctly American pizza chain to thrive in Italy, the birthplace of pizza, because Italians didn't have many options for getting a pie.
There is a lot of pizza, but not a lot of delivery pizza. There is still a chance.
"Domino's excellence in technology, being able to operate online delivery as nobody else, is what we will bring to Domino's," said Lazzaroni when Domino's first set up shop in Italy.
It was supposed to be the brand's second selling point in Italy because of its American taste for pizza.
When Domino's opened in Milan, Lazzaroni said they would use a recipe created by them. Everything else is made in Italy. All of our products are produced in Italy. We created our own pizza recipe with Italian products, like 100 percent tomato sauce and mozzarella, and products like Prosciutto di Parma, Gorgonzola, Grana Padano and Mozzarella di bufala Campana.
A cheeseburger pizza, a BBQ chicken pizza, and a Hawaiian pizza are listed on the Domino's Italy menu.
At one point, Lazzaroni said he wanted to open 850 Domino's locations in Italy by the year 2030.
The Italian company that held the master franchise rights to run Domino's in Italy blamed the closings on an increased level of competition.
Domino's did not reply immediately.
