According to a police report obtained by Insider, two men were attacked and called an anti-gay slur.

Two men were walking on a sidewalk in northwest Washington, DC, when they were attacked by a group of people. According to the police report, the suspects called them monkeys.

The suspects are not in custody at this time.

A representative from the Metropolitan Police Department said that the case was being investigated as possibly motivated by hate. The MPD is investigating the incident.

The nation is seeing a rise in anti-gay sentiment due to the monkeypox outbreak. Monkeypox can be spread through skin-to-skin contact regardless of sexuality.

The Mayor of DC said she was disturbed by the suspected hate crime.

"When a hate crime happens in our city, it is our collective responsibility to understand the role we each play in building a safer community for every person who lives in and visits DC." We need to stand up for our friends and neighbors right now because of the anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

The DC mayor said that they must call out the people in our circles if they promote hate or ignorant ideology. It is a collective effort to protect and advance our values.
