FBI agents raided the Florida home of former President Donald Trump on Monday and took about a dozen boxes, according to his lawyer.
Christina Bobb told NBC on Tuesday that a copy of the search warrant that FBI agents left at the Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach indicated they were investigating possible violations of laws related to the Presidential Records Act and the handling of classified material.
The FBI searched the home of a former president on Monday in connection with a criminal investigation. During the search, Trump wasn't in Mar- a-Lago.
The removal of records from the White House to Mar-a-Lago was being investigated by a federal grand jury. The documents were marked classified.
The records were retrieved from Mar-a-Lago by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Presidential Records Act requires that records be sent to the National Archives when a president leaves office.
Workers move boxes out of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House grounds, before the departure of U.S. President Donald Trump, in Washington, January 14, 2021.Bobb said that lawyers for Trump were talking to Justice Department officials about the records being stored at Mar-a-Lago.
She said that at one meeting, Trump's lawyers searched through between two and three dozen boxes in a storage area and gave the Justice Department a few pages that could meet the definition of being a presidential record.
Bobb said that she and another Trump lawyer were talking with a senior Justice Department official at Mar-a-Lago when Trump stopped by.
A source close to Trump told NBC New that he showed the Justice Department official the room where the materials were.
Bobb said Trump officials put a lock on the storage unit after Justice officials said they didn't think it was safe. She said that the lock was broken during the FBI search.
The FBI search was blasted by Trump's spokesman.
Budowich said that Monday's raid was unnecessary. It's normal for President Trump and his representatives to communicate and cooperate with the appropriate agencies.
He said that the actions of the president would make a dictator blush. The Democrats have unified and grown the conservative movement in their attempt to retain power.
The director of the FBI was appointed by the president.
The country deserves a thorough and immediate explanation of what happened on Monday, said Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell. Attorney General Garland and the Department of Justice should have given answers to the American people before now.
To get a search warrant, federal law enforcement authorities need to show that there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed and that the evidence they are looking for is related to that crime.
