A 51-year-old man has been charged with the murders of two Muslim men in Albuquerque.

APD Chief Harold Medina said at a press conference on Tuesday that Muhammad Syed had been charged with killing two people after a tip from the community.

According to Medina, detectives were about to conduct a search warrant at Syed's home when they saw him drive off in a car. The firearms used in the killings were located by detectives from there.

Medina said Syed has prior misdemeanors including a domestic violence charge.

Kyle Hartsock said that Syed may have been involved with the two other murders.

The last two weeks have seen the deaths of three people. The people were all from Pakistan. Police believe that a fourth killing was connected to the one that happened in November.

Just before 1 p.m., Chief Medina posted a message on his verified account. On Tuesday, his officers tracked down a vehicle they believed to be connected to the killings, and the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody.

The driver is the primary suspect in the murders, and more information will be released later in the day.

Living in fear

According to a mosque official and a victim's brother, the recent killings have caused fear among Muslims in the city.

The brother of a man who was killed on August 1 told Insider that they came to America from Pakistan looking for better futures for their family.

They had never been victims of hate violence before and felt safe walking alone at night or in the morning.

He told Insider that his brother has been moving his children between friends' homes in order to keep them safe.

He was shot in the head after walking out of his apartment.

He said that the way he was murdered was brutal. We were unable to put his head together.

Imtiaz is trying to move.

I am afraid for my safety and for my children. He said that his father called him to "please come back."

Aneela Abad is the general secretary of the Islamic Center of New Mexico.

Abad said they were shocked that someone who lives here can lie low and just reappear all of a sudden.
