According to multiple outlets, the White House hopes to help the U. by issuing an emergency declaration that will allow healthcare workers to extract five vaccines from a one-dose Jynneos monkeypox vaccine by changing the method of administration.
The New York Times reported that the Department of Health and Human Services will issue a declaration to allow the Food and Drug Administration to approve the new method.
The FDA said last week that it was considering the strategy and would make a decision soon.
FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said last week that the new method is not unusual and that it is a promising approach as the US struggles with vaccine shortages.
The new method will not sacrifice the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, Califf said last week, and the Times reported officials have consulted with outside infectious disease groups about the move.
Biden officials have faced criticism for the slow roll out of the vaccine, and now they have changed their methods.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the US has 8,934 confirmed cases of monkeypox and orthopoxviruses. There were more than 1,000 cases from the previous week.
The White House declared a public health emergency due to the monkeypox outbreak. The Biden administration has shipped more than 602,000 monkeypox vaccines to date and has about 1.1 million available, but that is only one-third of the amount needed for the estimated population at highest risk in the current global outbreak. The Jynneos two-dose regimen vaccine is the only shot approved by the FDA for monkeypox. The Biden administration has come under fire for taking too long to place orders from the company and for not having enough stock of the Jynneos vaccine. As a result, local jurisdictions have taken matters into their own hands, declaring public health emergencies and delaying the second dose of the vaccine to make sure more people can get the first shot.
Health officials said last week that 150,000 Jynneos will be released from the national stockpile in September. Reports say that there won't be more vaccines until October.
