Legislation to award the Congressional Gold medal to police officers who risked their lives during the January 6 riot was opposed by Republican lawmakers.
The medals for those who attacked the Capitol were approved by the House, but some Republicans objected to how they were described.
The GOP lawmakers joined a chorus of voices asking for the FBI to be destroyed and defunded for executing a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago.
Florida's governor and senator joined the former president's defense on Monday, saying it was politically motivated.
The GOP branch of the House Judiciary Committee criticized the FBI on social media. Not the US. Isn't the FBI's job to harass the former president?
Imagine what they can do to you if they can do it to a former President.
Despite indications that the search warrant is likely due to an overwhelming amount of evidence against Trump, the GOP protested. The current FBI chief was nominated by Trump in June of last year who the former president once described as a man of "impeccable credentials."
The FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago contrasts with the lawmakers' pro- law enforcement stance.

They deserve the praise and admiration of this body instead of the hyper-critique they have received recently. Police officers are often faced with grave threats.

Gaetz is not the only GOP lawmaker who supports the police.

—Rep. Ralph Norman (@RepRalphNorman) August 9, 2022
The "back the blue" slogan is something Norman supports.
Norman wrote on Facebook that law enforcement officers who serve their communities with honor and dignity will always have his respect.
Too many parts of our society don't appreciate or support our men and women in law enforcement. He said in that post that this has to stop. Everyone agrees that it's right to demand transparency from our law enforcement agencies. When law enforcement officers are held to account, it should be based on appropriate standards that are blind to external pressures.
—Congressman Greg Steube (@RepGregSteube) August 9, 2022
The rebuke of the FBI stands in stark contrast to the statement he made in May 2020 in support of law enforcement officers' mental health.
My father is a former Sheriff and my brother is a deputy sheriff. Our support and assistance should be given to those who put on the uniform every day to protect and serve.
