Matt Carpenter's dream comeback season with the New York Yankees may have ended Monday night.

He broke his left foot when he tried to foul off an 89 mph pitch from Gilbert.

After hobbling in pain, Carpenter went to bat and struck out. Tm Locastro came in at the plate.

"My mindset is that this won't be the last time I'm here," he said. I'm hoping that I can contribute.

A front-runner for American League Comeback Player of the Year, Carpenter is batting.300 with 15 home runs and 37 runs scored in just 128 at-bats for New York this season, and had reached base in 27 of his 35 starts. He had a.356 batting average last month.

Over the last two seasons, he hit seven home runs.

He spent the first month and a half of the season at Triple-A after signing with the Yankees.

Carpenter has a.727 batting average since he joined the Yankees, which is the best in MLB during that time period. New York averages over six runs per game with Carpenter in the lineup.
