According to McCarthy and Christovich, NBC was trying to get the Big Ten to become a college football conference.

According to the report, NBC is proposing a strategy that calls for back-to-back Big Ten and NFL games in prime time on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The void created by leaving ABC was filled by aligning with CBS. The conference wanted to have a consistent slate of broadcasts.
