A day after limping off the practice field in apparent pain, the New York Jets right tackle is having an exam on his injured knee.
According to the Jets, the injury doesn't appear serious, but if time lost is significant, it's because of weight and conditioning issues.
"As of now, it doesn't seem like a big deal, but -- knock on wood -- hopefully that stays the case," said coach Robert Saleh.
The 2020 first-round pick injured his knee in the first game of the season and never played again, even though the team initially said it would take four to six weeks to recover.
He labored through the drills on Monday, checking his knee and moving gingerly. On the second play of the 11-on-11 period, Becton fell backward after being hit by John Franklin-Myers. His right foot got caught in the grass, which may have caused his knee to bend.
He removed his shoulder pads and went straight to the locker room. He began wearing a knee brace last Friday as an indication that he may have begun to feel a bit uneasy.
The injury occurred two days after the Jets hosted free-agent tackle Duane Brown. Brown is a five-time Pro Bowl selection.
There is a greater sense of need to add an experienced tackle because of the injuries. Left tackle George Fant is back after knee surgery.
The team has a lot of great talent at tackle and Brown would be a luxury, according to Saleh.
"I don't think it makes me panic at all," he said. "Duane is a bonus, that's for sure."
There needs to be concern because of Becton's past injuries. He has only started 14 out of 33 games in the two seasons he's been with the team. He ballooned to about 400 pounds as he recovered from surgery.
He reported in good shape after training at the facility, despite being overweight at the mini camp. As he worked his way back into football shape, Becton was praised for his hard work.
It might be a challenge if he misses time.
He will see if he takes time off. You're worried for everyone." You don't want to lose your conditioning. He is a large man. He's worked his tail off and done everything he's been told to do. He can continue on this track if he checks out well. I think he will be okay.
