A day after Oklahoma assistant football coach Cale Gundy resigned from the Sooners, the head coach issued a new statement.

Venables said that Gundy resigned because he knew what he had done was wrong. A racially charged word that is objectionable to everyone and does not reflect the attitude and values of our university or our football program is what he chose to read to his players. It's not acceptable. There is nothing else to say. The right thing to do was for coach Gundy to resign. He knows that coaches have special responsibilities to set an example.

Mike Gundy, the Oklahoma State coach, was the longest serving coach in the Big 12. After 16 years as the running backs coach, he was the assistant head coach at Oklahoma. A show of support on social media was followed by his announcement.

Venables' statement said that the experience of pain felt by a room full of young men was what hurt the most.

Gundy said that he picked up the player's iPad and read the words on the screen because he noticed that the player was not concentrating.

Gundy said in a statement that someone in his position can cause harm without meaning. A man of character is willing to accept accountability. I'm responsible for this mistake. I'm sorry.

Gundy said that he was horrified when he realized what he was reading.

The words I read from the screen weren't mine. Gundy stated that what he said was not intentional. I am mature enough to know that the word I used was wrong and offensive.

Venables said that Gundy's resignation was needed.

While he will always be a part of the OU family, he knows that his words did not represent the principles of the university. His resignation was the right thing to do.
