The musical star who found enduring fame for her leading role in the film Grease has passed away. Her husband was the one to confirm the news.

In a statement posted on social media, John Easterling said that his wife died peacefully at her ranch in Southern California. Everyone is asked to respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.

Over the course of 30 years, she has shared her journey with breast cancer.

The breast cancerNewton-John had first suffered in 1992 had spread to her spine. She had kept her second cancer diagnosis a secret. She called upon her native Australia to allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes after living in California.

She said that her dream was that it would be available to all the cancer patients and people going through cancer that causes pain.

Immediately after her family's statement, tributes toNewton-John appeared.

George Takei wrote that we have lost an icon. We are forever devoted to you. Rest in song and good health.

After being diagnosed with cancer for the first time,Newton-John set up a research centre in Australia. Her prominence as an activist for research and better treatment will likely remain as a key part of her legacy as she had a successful career in music.

She will be most remembered for her portrayal of Sandy in the 1978 Broadway musical Grease. After meeting the producer at a dinner party, she was offered the lead role of Sandy, but worried she was too old to play a high school senior. Her role was changed to accommodate her accent.

The soundtrack of Grease spent 12 weeks at the top of the US charts. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Hopelessly Devoted to You.

One of the top 10 biggest sellers of all time is the soundtrack of the film.

When she was six years old,Newton- John and her family moved to Australia. Her father was an MI5 officer and her maternal grandfather was a physicist who fled to the UK from Nazi Germany on the eve of the Second World War.

In 1966 she recorded her first single on a return trip to England, and in 1971 she released her first solo album. Her song, Long Live Love, finished fourth behind Abba's winning Waterloo in the 1974 Eurovision song contest. She recorded country music before she was cast in Grease.

The transformation of her character in the film inspired a similar change in her music career. A second collaboration with Travolta, on the 1983 film Two of a Kind, flopped, but the pair remained close friends through the following decades.

Over the last four decades, a number of musical comebacks met with varying levels of success, which included battles with illness, raising a daughter, and campaigning in the fields of health, the environment and animal rights.

She said in 2012 that cancer was enlightening. It doesn't make a difference if you have all the money in the world. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to live.
