Two of the white men who killed Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced to life in prison for federal hate crimes.

William "Roddie" Bryan is expected to be sentenced later Monday for his role in the murder of a black man.

Three people are currently serving life sentences for murder in Georgia. Bryan will be eligible for parole after 30 years, but the McMichaels won't be able to.

In February 2020, while Arbery was out for a jog in Georgia, three men pursued him and killed him. Three men were arrested after the video of the violent attack was made public.

According to the AP, US District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood said that the man who killed Arbery had been given a fair trial.

Ahmaud Arbery didn't receive the kind of trial that he did before he was killed.

The gravity of Arbery's death was brought up by his family at the sentencing hearing.

Every shot that was fired was felt by me. "I wake up and tell myself it's another day without my 'Quez'," said his mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones.

Marcus Arbery said that the three devils had broken his heart into pieces.

The McMichaels will have to serve their state sentences first, even though they wanted to serve their time in a federal prison. Their attorney argued that he could face a "back door death penalty" in a state facility due to death threats against him.

Wood said at the sentencing that McMichael hadacted because of the color of Arbery's skin.

Arbery said that McMichael deserved to be put in prison.

He said that you killed him because he was black. You are not deserving of mercy.

The family of Arbery was addressed by Greg McMichael at his hearing.

He said that the loss that you have experienced is beyond description. I want to assure you that I didn't want this to happen, even though my words mean a lot to you.

During the federal trial, there were disturbing details of the men's racist behavior. The three had a long history of denigrating Black people, using slurs and advocating violence against them. According to testimony during the trial, after shooting Arbery, McMichael yelled the n-word at him.
