Qantas Airways needs executives from head office to leave their jobs for three months and haul luggage full time to address a labor shortage that's disrupting flights.

Qantas is looking for at least 100 volunteers to carry out shift work at two airports, according to Colin Hughes, the airline's COO. Load and unload luggage is one of the tasks, as well as driving the vehicles that take bags to planes and between airports.

According to the memo, applicants need to be able to move suitcases that weigh as much as 70 pounds.

The need to put executives on the job for months underscores the depth of the labor shortage during the global travel rebound. In June, Australia's national airline canceled 8.1% of domestic services.
