Brendan O'Neil pleaded guilty to injuring a black woman in a hit-and-run.

A white man in Wisconsin who was accused of swerving through a crowd, injuring a black woman and fleeing the scene in 2020 pled guilty to a felony.

Brendan O'Neil agreed to a plea deal that will allow him to clear the hit-and-run conviction from his record. O'Neil can have his record wiped clean if he completes a first-time offenders program.

Alize Carter, 24, was left with a fractured hand, abrasions and a concussion after O'Neil ran into her at a downtown Madison bar.

Police used pepper spray to clear the crowd from the scene as emergency responders tended to Carter. The police action was deemed excessive by some witnesses.

According to the Journal, in the aftermath of the collision, the then-acting police chief said that crowd members deliberately remained in their way as they responded.

The hit-and-run that occurred as Black Lives Matter protests surged nationwide was dubbed the hit-and-run by activist groups. The Mayor's statement left open the possibility that race was a motivator in O'Neil's actions.

According to the Journal, Wahl sent a report to Rhodes-Conway claiming that the crowd of several hundred people was socializing in the roadway when some began jumping into the bed of O'Neill's truck, proceeding to dance on it and physically attack the driver.

The driver was punched in the face when he drove into the crowd. The driver drove through the crowd and hit the victim.

The trial for the case will no longer be necessary, as O'Neil's record can eventually be cleared, and he has made efforts through his insurer to provide Carter financial compensation, according to the outlet.

Since the incident, O'Neil has moved out of the state because he did not feel safe in his Sun Prarie residence.
