Chinese scientists want to use the moon to look at the beginning of the universe.

The team behind theDSL mission, also known as Hongmeng, wants to send satellites to the moon to pick up signals from the stars.

The goal is to get a glimpse at the so-called Cosmic Dark Ages, a mysterious era before the first stars began to shine.

News about China's space program.

A group of satellites will gather signals from the deep universe while on the far side of the moon. When on the near side of the moon, a mother satellite will collect data from her daughters and send it back to Earth.

Due to the planet's ionosphere, it is very difficult to receive signals from the early universe. According to the South China Morning Post, the proposal is an innovative alternative to setting permanent telescopes on the far side of the moon.

One of the proposed astronomy, exploration, Earth science, heliophysics and exoplanet missions is headed by Chen Xuelei of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

According to the South China Morning Post, DSL could be approved in the coming weeks.

The mission was previously proposed as a Sino-European project but was not selected according to the report. The new proposal has a chance of being approved.
