Jackson told the Hollywood Reporter that he and writer-producer Fran Walsh were at one point asked if they would be involved in the series. Jackson said that it was impossible to answer without seeing a script. After the ball was in Amazon's court, they said they would send episode script to the duo. He said that the script never came.
Amazon gave their own statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
“In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching The Rings of Power.”
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are said to be fans of Jackson's trilogy and have tried to reach out to him. Christopher, the son of the creator of The Lord of the Rings, has made it clear in the past that he dislikes Jackson's film trilogy. It makes sense that they have to follow the rules of the estate since they spent a lot of money to get the rights. It's a shame that Jackson can't be involved, but he's excited to see what the show becomes
I will be looking at it. Jackson does not wish ill will. I am excited to see it as a neutral viewer.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be available on Amazon.
