On Saturday, Michael Thomas took the next step in his return to football.

For the first time since the end of the 2020 season, Thomas took part in 11-on-11 drills. Thomas was able to practice on the first day of camp and return to 7-on-7 drills on the second day.

It has been positive signs for his recovery from the injury to his left ankle, which required surgery. Thomas hasn't been a full participant in practice since the end of the 2020 season because he hasn't been fully recovered from his injury.

After having surgery on his ankle, Thomas didn't play in the regular season last year, but did return to action in the playoffs.

Dennis Allen joked on Saturday that he had said on Friday that Thomas' return to team drills was imminent.

He said he told you it was coming sooner than later.

Saturday was a good day for Thomas to strengthen his ankle.

He ended up on the ground a few times. Building that confidence is part of the process. I think he is in a good place right now. I'm looking forward to where he is.

Thomas began the first set of team drills on Saturday with a pass from quarterback Jameis Winston, but later attempted a catch down the sideline that was broken up by a defensive back. He caught a pass that was fumbled and recovered by the safety, who returned to full team drills on Saturday after missing the beginning of camp for personal reasons.

Ian Book caught Thomas' catch at the end of the day.

We have kept the reins back on him, more so than it has been his. Allen said that it was part of the ramp-up process and that they would continue to ramp him up.

On Wednesday, Thomas made a statement by going 3-for3 in his return to 7-on-7 work. He has looked good in one-on-one work. The first preseason game for the Saints is against the Texans on August 13th.

According to a source, Alonso has decided to retire and didn't show up for practice. After two years away from football, Alonso signed with the Saints on Friday and participated in that day's practice.

He was fully recovered from a torn knee at the end of the Saints' season, but changed his mind about a comeback, and decided to retire. He played for the Bills, Eagles, Dolphins, and Saints in the National Football League.
