Matt Rhule 'not putting a timetable' on QB1 position until after Patriots week (0:31)

Matt Rhule says he won't make a decision on a starting quarterback until after the game with the New England. There is a 0:31

After the preseason game at New England, the Carolina panthers will not make a major decision on any position.

Rhule might not make a decision if one hasn't separated from the other after two practices and a game.

After Saturday's scrimmage in which neither quarterback had a decisive advantage, Rhule said he wouldn't put a timetable on the quarterback position. It's a real litmus test for us. That will let us know where guys are.

The panthers may have lost defensive end Marquis Haynes for an extended period of time with a left knee injury. Carolina was thin at that position and had tried to get Dunlap to join them.

Pierre-Paul is one of the most notable free agents. He had 2.5 sacks for the Buccaneers last season, down from the 9.5 he had the previous year.

The quarterbacks were working with the first team in red zone drills and one of the drives ended with a touchdown by Chuba Hubbard. While working with the second team, he threw a touchdown pass to Giovanni Ricci.

Both teams took equal reps with the first and second teams during the two-hour practice. The quarterback was 14-for-21 with a long touchdown pass. He was 20 of 28 with a touchdown.

The quarterback tried to get the ball into tight coverage. On the second play of the game, DJ Moore had the ball stripped from his hands by defensive back Myles Hartsfield.

Baker had to force the ball behind the field because of apenalty.

When he tried to force a pass while scrambling to his right, he was picked off by a recently acquired defensive back.

Rhule said it was difficult to make an immediate judgement on how the quarterbacks performed because they were playing against different people.

Rhule said it was disappointing that each guy had an intercept. The football needs to be protected.

Rhule was upset that the wide receiver didn't run into the end zone after a reception from Mayfield. He did a patented celebration in which he rolls the football and then walks down the imaginary carpet.

The offense ran after that.

Rhule said that they aren't a team that crosses the goal line. "After you score a touchdown, have fun, this isn't a true game, but we're playing it like a game," he said. In between the white lines.

Rhule said there was a lot to like about the plays and long drives from the two quarterbacks. The staff will dig into the tape to see who is mastering the offense and who is not.
