We haven't had a debate about the merits of headphones jacks in a long time. Like it or not, we have all moved on from there in our phones, with the exception of the occasional plug. The iPad Pro moved away from the headphones.

This time, it is for laptops, and it came back in 2022.

The edge of the Dell XPS 13 Plus' chassis.

The new flagship laptop from Dell is bursting at the seams with new ideas and fresh innovation. A row of touch buttons, an edge-to-edge keyboard, and an invisible touchpad are included.

The design didn't leave room for a standard audio jack. Even the ultra-thin M2 MacBook Air has a jack.

It is about how the designers at Dell use the space. The design of the device is very efficient due to the keyboard running right up to the edge of the sides. The extra-large key caps can be extended right to the edge of the laptop. It looks amazing.

Some designs were off the table due to the need for a jack.

The only place where ports can be found is between the keyboard and the hinge. The cutting room floor had the headphones jack on it. The removal of the headphones jack allows for this type of innovation.

That is more justification than was given when the earphone jack was removed from the phone. We were told that it would allow for thinner devices, bigger batteries, and more features. Dell showed how some designs were off the table due to the need for a jack.

It will not be true for every laptop that decides to remove this port in the future. Some manufacturers will jump on the bandwagon just to look trendy. Who knows what else could be done with the extra space in the Chassis? One less port can be the difference.

The adoption of wireless audio was accelerated because of the popularity of the smartphones. Even as the standards for connecting to the internet continue to improve, wireless earbuds are still cheap.

I found myself using the headphones less and less on my laptop. Don't think I'm telling the truth? Take a look at how many times you need to use it over the course of a week. It's less than you think.

I only ever had one situation where I wished I had a jack. I wanted to listen to music while I was working. I couldn't find a way to plug in my backup pair of headphones. The problem was fixed a few seconds after the box arrived. I returned to work before I knew it. It was a bit clumsy, but it showed me how small a need I actually had for a jack.

I don't think every laptop needs to have headphones.

I know what you're talking about. You love using your old wired computer speakers at your desk. Maybe you like the convenience of jacking into your entertainment system. Maybe you don't like the technology.

I don't think every laptop needs to have headphones. There will always be room for older ports in PCs and laptops because of the huge variety of designs. Apple reversed course on its MacBook Pros to bring back some of their previous features. Some use cases with laptops make sense for a jack to be included.

Don't make fun of the innovation. It doesn't help anyone if features are removed for the sake of doing so. Dell has shown that there are advantages to taking the plunge, and I am ready to embrace what a future without a jack has to offer.
