The Indianapolis Star reported that Indiana is the first state to have established an abortion ban after the Wade decision.
The bill was sent to the governor late Friday night. It was signed into law within an hour.
There are exceptions for abortions on the condition of rape or incest before 10 weeks after fertilization and in cases where the life of the pregnant person is at risk. There is an exception if the fetus is diagnosed with a fetal abnormality.
Prior to the bill, abortions were allowed up until 20 weeks after fertilization.
I made it clear that I would support legislation that made progress in protecting life after the overturn of the abortion law. Holcomb said in a statement Friday night that he believed SEA 1 accomplished this goal after it was passed in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly.
On September 15 the ban will take effect.
Holcomb and the legislature didn't reply immediately.
