A couple celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary with a trip to the nation's capital were killed in a lightning strike at a park across from the White House.

James and Donna were killed.

A third person, a 29-year-old man, died Friday. They weren't immediately released with their names.

The White House is praying for the families who lost loved ones after the lightning strike.

There was a lightning strike just before 7pm. Across the street from the White House is a park. Two men and two women were taken to hospitals with life threatening injuries.

The lightning strike was witnessed by members of the U.S. Secret Service.

A wedding anniversary trip

The couple's niece said that they were in Washington to celebrate their anniversary.

They were high school sweethearts. They were going to go to Mount Vernon today.

The Mullers were retired.

Jim was retired but still worked at the business.

Donna was a retired teacher who worked at a furniture store.

Cuba City is located in southwest Wisconsin near the Mississippi River.

The family is close.

They have a lot of children and great-grandsons.

"Donna loved to spend time with her family." One of their sons is getting married next year and they had an engagement party a few weeks ago.

They would do anything for family or friends. Jim would let you take his shirt off.

The couple traveled a lot. They were fond of seeing their family.

The Mueller's were remembered as great dancers. They would get out on the dance floor at the reception.

The family is shocked by the deaths of the couple.

She said that she didn't know what to say.

There are still funeral arrangements to be made.

Lightning was spawned by severe thunderstorm

Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas were under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time of the lightning strike.

The weather service says 11 people were killed by lightning in the US last year.

The White House used the land as a staging area in the 1800s.

There are a lot of political gatherings at the park.
