The city of SAVANNAH is located in Georgia. The white man who fatally shot Ahmaud Arbery after chasing the Black man in a Georgia neighborhood says he fears for his life if he is sent to a state prison to serve a life sentence for murder.

McMichael was found guilty on federal hate crime charges. The defense attorney asked the judge to keep Mc Michael in federal custody.

The Georgia state prison system is under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department due to concerns about violence between inmates.

McMichael and his father jumped in a truck to chase Arbery after he ran past their home in the port city of Brunswick. William "Roddie" Bryan joined the chase in his own truck and recorded a cellphone video of McMichael shooting Arbery.

The killing of Arbery was one of a number of killings of black people by white people.

The McMichaels and Bryan were sentenced to life in prison in Georgia after being found guilty of Arbery's murder. They have been in custody of the U.S. marshals since they were found guilty of hate crimes. The defendants could face a second life sentence.

Once the men are sentenced on Monday, they will be turned over to the Georgia Department of Correction to serve their prison terms for murder. They were tried by state authorities after their arrest.

She wrote that McMichael was concerned that he would be killed upon delivery to the state prison system. There are many threats of death that are credible.

Georgia's corrections agency replied that the threats were legit and that it could securely house Mc Michael.

Greg McMichael wants the judge to put him in federal prison because of his health and safety issues.

The family of Arbery wants the McMichaels and Bryan to serve their time in a state prison. The McMichaels wanted a plea deal that would have included a request to transfer them to federal prison, but his parents objected vociferously. The judge rejected the deal.

Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told the judge at a hearing that she would lose her mind if the men were given their choice of confinement. It allows them to spit in my face.

Ed Tarver, an Augusta lawyer and former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, said that a federal judge doesn't have the power to order a state to give up its lawful custody of inmates.

Tarver said that it would be up to the state Department ofCorrections to decide whether or not to allow the request.

The McMichaels and Bryan were kept in federal custody through the completion of the federal trial and any post- trial proceedings, according to the court filing. She argued that McMichael's hate crime conviction should keep him in federal custody.
