The New York Post reported on Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will hold a vote on the bipartisan antitrust bill targeting tech giants as early as this fall.
The bill would prohibit tech platforms from favoring their own products and services over those of their competitors.
Schumer promised to hold a vote on the legislation this summer if there were 60 senators who approved it. The Washington Post reported last month that at least a dozen senators were still on the fence as the August recess approached.
“Sen. Schumer is working with Sen. Klobuchar and other supporters to gather the needed votes and plans to bring it up for a vote”
Schumer is working with other people to get the necessary votes for a vote, according to a statement from his office. The bill is co-sponsored by two senators.
With the AICO on its way to final approval, major tech companies went on a spending spree. In the second quarter alone, Amazon spent a record-breaking $4.78 million in lobbying.
Schumer said on Thursday that the Senate could approve an antitrust upheaval. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle supported his commitment to holding an AICO vote.
More than a dozen leaders of the Congressional Progressives Caucus wrote a letter to Schumer urging him to hold a vote before the August recess. Budget reconciliation and veteran care were priorities of the Democrats.
