The Marriott brand will be removed from a Ritz-Carlton property in North America.

Ritz-Carlton Cancun leaves Marriott as of September 2022

The Ritz-Carlton is no longer a Marriott. As of that date, the hotel won't be affiliated with Marriott, though it remains to be seen what will happen to the property.

Marriott Bonvoy members love the beach resort. It wasn't the most luxurious or intimate Ritz-Carlton, but it was still reasonably priced. The hotel opened in 1993 and is the first Ritz-Carlton resort outside the US.

The destination has seen an increase in crime in the last few months, which has made some people more cautious about visiting.

What will the Ritz-Carlton Cancun become?

We don't know what will happen to the Ritz-Carlton Cancun, so we can only speculate. There are a few things to think about.

  • I have to imagine this will continue to operate as a hotel, as it’s probably too new and big to be demolished and turned into something else
  • One possibility is that the resort goes independent, thinking the costs of being associated with Marriott aren’t worth it
  • It’s possible that the hotel could be joining a different hotel group, though I can’t help but wonder if the hotel would go upmarket or downmarket; was Marriott requiring the hotel to make some sort of an investment to maintaining the Ritz-Carlton branding, or what?

The most likely scenarios are that the hotel goes independent or that it becomes more premium.

Bottom line

Marriott will no longer have an affiliation with the Ritz-Carlton in September 2022. We don't know what will happen after the hotel leaves Marriott, but it has been confirmed that the hotel is leaving.

I am not interested in vacationing here, but I am curious about the property.

Do you think the Ritz-Carlton should leave the Marriott?
