Commonwealth Games: Lawrence Okoye wins discus silver at Birmingham 2022

Lawrence Okoye won a silver medal in the discus at the Commonwealth Games.

Okoye decided to return to discus after his football career came to an end.

He didn't make the final at the Tokyo Olympics or the World Championships, but a 64.99m throw took him to the podium.

Andrew Pozzi fell over the line as he won a bronze medal.

An injury to Hansle Parchment of Jamaica opened the door for England's Pozzi and Joshua Zeller.

Broadbell equaled the Commonwealth record set by Jackson in 1990 with a time of 13.08 seconds.

Pozzi sprinted from lane eight to win a medal.

Zeller was two hundredths of a second slower than Pozzi.

Pozzi said that he drove for the line.

I was desperately trying to get there.

It was necessary. The past few years have had a toll on athletes.

Pozzi relocated to Italy to train with Santiago Antunez, but found himself isolated and restricted due to the Covid outbreak and Britain's new relationship with the EU.

It also meant a long distance relationship with partner and fellow athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who has trained in France and the US in recent years.

Pozzi moved back to the UK in order to find form and new guidance after Antunez moved toColombia.

Okoye lands discus medal

Okoye reached the Olympic final and finished the year with the fifth-furthest throw of the season.

The 20-year-old had more than one option. He signed a deal with the San Francisco 49ers instead of pursuing athletics, rugby union or a law degree.

He made his comeback to athletics after being traded to the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins.

This is a huge breakthrough for me. Okoye said that doing this means a lot because he has doubted himself a lot.

I've thrown a lot of training and warm-ups but haven't gotten it all together in a competition.

"Today was a great step forward and hopefully in the Europeans, I can really unlocks my potential."

Okoye's personal best remains a 68.24m effort from May 2012 and he believes he can throw over 70m, a distance that would have won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Kinghorn and Wightman revel in Birmingham atmosphere

Scotland's Sammi Kinghorn felt the love of the south-of-the-border crowd as they tried to roar her home.

The 26-year-old was able to finish with a bronze medal.

She said it was a dream come true to win a medal for Scotland.
