Politicians have had enough of the delays and canceled flights of the summer.
Less than a week after Elizabeth Warren called for better scrutiny of the industry, her Democratic colleagues are following suit.
The bill proposed by Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee would require airlines to give refunds for canceled flights.
Legislators said future credits and flight vouchers aren't enough.
"Americans have a right to these refunds and they are sick and tired of fighting the airlines for them." It is difficult to book travel months ahead. The plans are different. If airlines give reasonable notice, consumers shouldn't have to eat it.
The act is called the Cash Refunds for Flight Cancellations Act. Within 30 days of a flight being canceled, airlines would be required to give a cash refund.
Vouchers are often pushed in cases where passengers are entitled to cash refunds. The airlines should make consumers aware that they have a cash option, according to an aviation expert.
John Breyault is a vice president at the National Consumers League.
Breyault said that airlines love having vouchers because they are free money on their books.
