The methods used by the North Korean hackers to read and download messages are not detected by the internet search engine.
They're using simple browser extensions to steal mail data, and are targeting users in the US, Europe, and South Korea, according to a post on the Volexity website.
These types of attacks, known as "spear phish", have required users to download rogue browser extensions in the past, but these attacks are different because the victims don't know what's going on.

Volexity notes that the software has evolved steadily since it was discovered.
The current iteration of SharpTongue is only affecting Windows users according to Volexity. Steven Adair warned that MacOS or Linux users could be next.
According to Volexity, SharpTongue targets and victimizes individuals working for organizations in the United States, Europe and South Korea who work on topics involving North Korea, nuclear issues, weapons systems, and other matters of strategic interest to North Korea.
