The 39-year-old Detroit Tiger is unsure if he'll return for the next season or retire, as his career in Major League Baseball is winding down.

After meeting with his agent, the general manager and others, he will make a decision about his future in 2020.

"I don't feel well right now, I don't know what's going on," he said. I'm trying to do everything I can to play, but I don't feel well.

The final year of his contract is in 2023 and he will make $32 million.

The Venezuela was diagnosed with a knee injury. He consulted four surgeons, but they didn't recommend surgery, so he has been trying to manage the problem.

Even though he was shifted from first base to designated hitter, he was still having issues with his knee. The veteran is hitting just.132/.231/.206 in 20 games since July 8.

In 70 games from April 8 through July 6, he was hitting.308/.373/.372 with three home runs and 31 runs scored.

A.J. Hinch told reporters that he was going to try to give him some extra days off with his production having fallen.

Hinch wants to get him a few more regularly scheduled days off. We want to give some of them to some guys. I might sprinkle in a few more off days.

Hinch said that the team has been keeping an eye on the pain and that it's something they have been monitoring.

Detroit is in fourth place in the American League Central. It would be wise to give him some rest with no chance of making the playoffs.

He'll be a candidate for the Baseball Hall of Fame if his career ends in 2022.

He began his career with the Florida Marlins in 2003 and has been in Detroit for the last 15 years.

He was a four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger and helped the team win the 2003 World Series.

He has been selected to eight All-Star games, including seven in a row from 2010-16, and has earned five Silver Slugger awards.

The 2012 Triple Crown was baseball's first in 45 years. He has won the title four times, the last in 2015.

He is one of 33 players in MLB history to have reached 3,000 hits and one of 28 players to have hit 500 homers.
