All of your health tracking choices look the same. They usually come with a wristband, whether it's a watch or a tracker. Oura decided to put a ring on it with the Oura Ring Gen 3.

The third-generation Oura Ring is nearly as good as any of the best fitness trackers because it has more advanced sensors. If it weren't for the companion app, you wouldn't know it was there. The Oura Ring Gen 3 is out of sight, out of mind, unlike most of the other watches that have displays to distract you from what you're doing.

Oura Ring Gen 3: The good stuff

It looks like it's a regular ring. You can see that it's so much more when you look on the inside. It's shocking that a small thing can do so much. The Oura Ring Gen 3 can be used to track your health, like a fitness tracker.

Even though it's small, it's still comfortable to wear and has some of the basics down. It feels durable despite the light build. When wearing the ring, you don't notice the three sensors that protrude from the inside of the building.

The sensors are used for a lot of things. The Gen 3 is stuffed with 3x more sensors and 32x more memory than the previous model, according to Oura. The previous Oura Ring's owners may appreciate this new technology.

Oura says that the combination of all these sensors should allow users to detect if they're sick, which is particularly important since the current COVID-19 Pandemic is still affecting a lot of the world.

Oura stuffed a lot of features into such a small device.

The Oura companion app is a great way to bring it all together. It has a home screen that shows your readiness and sleep scores.

The amount of time it took to fall asleep is one of the factors used to calculate the latter score. I was very impressed with its ability to track my sleep, and there was nothing different than what my watch did.

Your readiness score tells you how prepared you are to tackle the day by taking all of your measurements. How well you sleep, body temperature, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability are some of the factors that make up this. When the app told me to take a day of rest, I appreciated it.

If the ring notices that I haven't been active, they sometimes give me nudgings. My phone will ping me if I'm lazy, telling me to get up and stretch my legs.

Sometimes you need to get called out when you aren't motivated. The Oura Ring will help me by nudging me to get ready for sleep based on my usual sleep patterns.

If you're on the App Store, Oura Ring can detect a lot of activities, but it's not available on the Play Store. It's easy to fill in the blanks because of its activity graphs, which show when your heart rate was elevated or when you were moving.

When I finish a strength training session, I can input it manually using my movement and heart rate. It can sync activity to and from my watch.

The ring has a lot of activity tracking features, but the battery life is great. In my use, I can get in a full week before needing to charge it. I rarely take the thing off, so it's always following me.

The ring is updated.

The Oura Ring has received several updates since it was launched.

Automatic Activity Detection allows the ring to begin tracking activities without the user having to do anything.

The company gave users a better look at their health by introducing workout heart rate monitoring.

Users can monitor blood oxygen levels while they sleep with the help of Oura. Oura syncs activity data with Strava.

Users will be able to determine their next fertility window with the help of oura and natural cycles.

Oura Ring Gen 3: What could use some work

It takes about as long to top up the Oura Ring when it's time to charge. There will be no fast charging tech here. It took nearly two hours to get the ring back to 100%. It could still be quicker if you take some rest time as the ring suggests from time to time.

The Oura Ring Gen 3 has a discreet design that I really like. That design can also work against it. The Oura Ring can sometimes get in the way of someone doing a lot of weight lifting. It's present when benching or doing curls, but not with every workout. It's a tough ring, but after one set, I will notice a few scratches.

It shouldn't be a problem when I'm doing activities, but weightlifters shouldn't wear rings during workouts. It's not a perfect solution and I wear gloves.

I don't think the membership is good. It costs $6 per month and gives you access to many features that make the ring useful. You get six months for free as a new member, but it becomes an added cost on top of the already expensive ring, as this kind of thing has become par for the course for many fitness trackers.

There doesn't seem to be a way to find the ring. You can use a tracker app to try and find it. If you lose a lot of stuff, you could end up with a pricey tracker.

Oura Ring Gen 3: Competition

You're most likely looking for a fitness tracker if you want something with more oomph. No one makes them better than the tracker company. The Charge 5 has a color display. Thanks to the premium membership, you get automatic workout detection, an electrocardiogram sensor, and tons more.

If you're a fan of not having a screen to distract you, the AmazonHalo band is a good alternative. It's a comfortable band that comes in a variety of colors and has a lot of basic health tracking features. Tone and Body Composition can be a little intrusive and can cause the battery to go down a lot faster.

The best watch for the full experience is the GALAXY WATCH 4. You can leave your phone at home and have access to impressive health and tracking features if you choose the optionalLTE option. Your body composition can be measured by the BIA sensor, which can be used to target areas you can improve on.

Oura Ring Gen 3: Should you buy it?

If you do, you should purchase this.

  • You are looking for a good health tracking device.
  • You don't want to be distracted by a display.
  • You want a stylish yet discreet accessory.

If you want to buy this, you should not.

  • You're a weightlifter.
  • You're looking for an inexpensive fitness tracker.
  • You lose small items easily.

The Oura Ring Gen 3 is a discreet fitness tracker that won't distract you from most activities. It looks like a regular ring and you won't be distracted by a display so that you can concentrate on your workout. The companion app can give you personalized insights that will help you get the rest you need.

If you are a weightlifter, it will get in the way, which will force you to take the ring off and kind of defeats the purpose of having an activity tracker. It is pricey and there are many cheaper alternatives.

For its size, the Oura Ring Gen 3 is an excellent tracker. Oura has put a lot of sensors into a small body of equipment. It can help you get the best out of your day by guiding you and giving you detailed insight into your sleep and activity levels.

It is not for everyone, especially those that need a more robust feature set. The Oura Ring Gen 3 should do the trick for most people. When you factor in the membership cost, it's hard to see how it would be attractive to those people.

You can find many of the features in the Oura Ring on cheaper fitness trackers and watches. It's still pretty impressive given what it's capable of, but it seems like you're paying for novelty at this point. Is the discreet design something you want to pay a premium for? Not really, as a person who does a lot of weight lifting. This is a good investment for runners and swimmers.
