One of the more affordable plug-in SUVs on the market today is the Volkswagen ID.4 which will start at $37,495.

The ID.4 could come down even more if the Senate Democrat's new reconciliation package is approved. A delivery charge of $1,295 will be applied to every unit.

The ID.4 has been VW's most popular EV since it was released in 2021. The VW CEO said in May that the company had sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and the US for the year.

Localizing the ID.4’s production in the US was supposed to unlock a cheaper price for the EV

The cheaper price for the EV was supposed to be unlocked by localizing the ID4. The base model ID.4 came with a suggested price of over forty thousand dollars. The initial plan was for the ID.4s to start at $35k with the tax credit.

The cost of EV production, including the source of battery materials, is much higher than it was four years ago. Researchers say that the cost of raw materials used to make EV batteries has gone up.

The ID.4 is going to get a bit of a refresh. VW offers the EV in three trims, Standard / Pro, S, and S Plus, with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The ID.4 Standard comes with a new 62kWh battery which will power the vehicle for an estimated range of 207 miles. The ID.4 is on the lower end of the range scale as compared to other similar electric vehicles, such as the Ford Mach-E, Chevy Bolt EUV, and Nissan Ariya, all of which average around 250 to 300 miles of range.

The ID.4 will be in direct competition with the Chevy Bolt, which retails for over $40,000. The Nissan Leaf is an electric vehicle.

VW emphasized that the ID.4 was a high-volume, mass-market vehicle and not a car for millionaires.
