  • The US sailors and Marines were in Greece in May.

  • Local media reported that they overwhelmed a lot of restaurants.

  • The US military's increased interest in Greece is reflected in the visit.

At the end of May, a US Navy amphibious transport dock arrived in Greece for a port call.

The 1,500 officers and enlisted Marines aboard the ship spent three days in the northeastern Greek city and ate all of the eggs.

Giorgos Alavantas said up to 7,000 eggs were eaten during a single day in the US. According to local media, Alavantas said we don't have eggs.

"I serve 16 different types of meat at my restaurant, and they tried them all," according to a former president of the association.

The increasing importance of Europe's southeastern corner to the US and the NATO alliance is highlighted by the visit by sailors and Marines.

The Dardanelles, the maritime entryway to the Black Sea, is 60 miles away from Alexandroupoli.

The city's location and its expanding road and railroad network allow quick access to the Black Sea, the Balkans, and other destinations around NATO's southeastern flank.

In October, an updated mutual defense cooperation agreement was signed between Greece and the US The US was given priority access to the port under the agreement.

"That access allows us to continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine and to counter malign actors and exercise and operate in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea region," Lloyd Austin said during a recent visit by the Greek defense minister to Washington DC

The increased US presence is intended to counter Russia's influence in a part of Europe where Moscow has traditionally held sway because of ethnic and economic ties.

Greece is a key hub for supporting and projecting allied presence in a region facing various forms of revisionism, according to the defense minister.

The US has had a lot of equipment and troops in Greece in the last few years.

The port has supported the rotation of US troops and equipment in Europe through the operation.

The Italian army will use the port to move equipment to Europe according to the port authority chairman. Britain plans to do the same.

Plans to build a floating storage and regasification unit for gas in the sea a few miles south of the city are part of European energy security.

The convergence point for regional gas networks from Italy and Bulgaria to Turkey and Georgia will be achieved by the end of the next decade.

The EU's Southern Energy Corridor is a plan to bring Azeri gas through Turkey to Europe in order to decouple itself from Russian natural gas.

The US ambassador to Greece said in May that Europe is moving quickly to reduce its vulnerability to Russian energy blackmail and get away from Russian gas

Some people are unhappy with the growing importance of Alexandroupoli.

A pressure point

Russia and Turkey don't like the increased US presence in the area.

The problem is very simple according to the Kremlin press secretary. NATO and US troops are in your area. A lot of military equipment is transported through the area.

"You have to understand us, this is worrying us," he said.

The relationship between Greece and Russia deteriorated due to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and Athens's support for the Ukrainian government. Russia declared Greece an unfriendly state after expelling some of its diplomats.

The Turkish president is against the US presence. Shortly before the US and Greece signed an updated defense-cooperation agreement, President Joe Biden was told by Turkey's Prime Minister that establishing a base there wasn't good for the country.

Both Greece and Turkey are NATO allies, but have disagreements. Turkey's challenge of the sovereignty of a number of Greek islands has led to a worsening of their relationship.

The US bases in Greece were not welcomed by the Turkish leader. Which ones were they established? They say it's against Russia. We don't agree with it.

The US military doesn't have a base in the city yet, but is using a Greek army base. As tensions in the region intensify, its importance will keep increasing.
