Despite winning the SEC, beating Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl and competing in the College Football Playoff National Championship game, Alabama coach Nick Saban looked back on last season and said it was "kind of a rebuilding year."
It's true that Alabama had to replace a number of starters last season, but it didn't lead to a dip in production.
Jameson Williams was named a first-team All-American after catching 15 touchdown passes.
Williams was drafted in the first round by the Detroit Lions, but Young is back for his junior year.
"We should have had nine starters back on both offense and defense, but six of them turned pro early," he said.
It also gives other players a chance to shine in the program and contribute in a positive way. "We have to be able to develop a team because nobody knows how this stuff is going to come to fruition, but that is part of the excitement and challenge."
Will Anderson Jr., a possible top pick in the draft, is returning to Alabama. He was the leader in sacks and tackles for loss.
The media has Alabama as the favorite to win the SEC this season. The season begins at home against Utah State.
"I'm looking to see if my team will have the leadership and competitive character that I need," he said.
"Developing into the kind of team that you're capable of being is the most important thing you can do," he said.
