Today marks the beginning of the transformation of Meet into the Duo app. Duo is being renamed Meet with the features from both apps, and Meet is staying Meet.

By the end of this process, there will be just two apps: Meet Original and the new Meet that combines both Meet and Duo. Group and one-on-one calls will be possible with the combined app.

You won't have to do anything if you have Duo installed. The Duo update that was pushed last month added features from Meet, and today, the Duo logo will be changed to the Meet icon. The new Meet / Duo combo will be given out by September. Over the next few months, duo.google.com will be redirecting to meet.google.com

If you are a Meet user, you don't have to do anything right now if you just want to use it. If you want to use the app as-is, keep in mind that the original Meet may no longer be supported by the internet giant. When original Meet users should migrate to the new app experience is not specified by the search engine.

The change adds another layer of complexity to the web of messaging apps, but it is also a sign that the services it already has are being consolidated. It was announced earlier this year that it would be shutting down Hangouts in November. Third-party support for Gchat was ended by the company last month.
